For kids only. Not even for kids-at-heart. As the accompanying adult, you will end up having had a vocabulary lesson for an hour and a half, learning the Smurf-lingo.

If you are new to Smurf-lingo, you will easily become smurf-savvy if you are able to use ‘smurf’ in place of any and all manner of nouns, verbs and adjectives, like “I think I just smurfed in my mouth”, “Son of a smurf”, “Where the smurf are we?”, “Up smurf creek without a smurfing paddle”, and the byline-like “Smurf happens”. One reviewer terms the movie “enough noise and neon to distract under eights…”.

If you are aware of the original TV series and the stuffed toys, you will allow at least the term ‘like-able’. However, no one will blame you – except the kids, of course – if you don’t feel quite as charitable after seeing the blue ones on the big screen.

Director Raja Gosnell’s 3D semi-animated film “The Smurfs” is all about the adventures of a bunch of cute Smurfs and one Smurfette.

The Smurfs is an incongruous combination of different kinds of movie. Another reviewer calls it a “celluloid version of the game ‘exquisite corpse’, where multiple people work on the same drawing without seeing what the others have drawn”. One part tries to recreate innocent magic of the characters, another tries to temper the sweetness with (somewhat poor) humour, yet another theme seems tailored for the older sections of viewers, and a fourth part consists of somewhat dull action sequences.

As an accompanying adult – be ready to put up with the kids who seem to love the blue brigade. And don’t let the kids catch you muttering, ‘I Smurfing wish I was elsewhere’.

If you are familiar with The Smurfs, attempt the Smurf Quiz

What a Rio-t of colours! A family film complete with gorgeously coloured visuals, and the good old victory-of-good-over-evil formula. There’s nothing new on offer, certainly not in the way of the Toy Story trilogy or WALL-E. And you may well forget all about Brazil’s macaws once the lights come on, but while in the theatre with the kids, we simply felt good, and certainly enjoyed a vast amount of laughs.

Carlos Saldanha (of Ice Age fame) gives himself free rein among a gag of quirky birds, in this Blue Sky Studios 3D animation film simply named Rio. Blu, (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) is a cerulean plumed macaw who is happy to live in Minnesota as the well-loved pet of Linda (voiced by Leslie Manna) bookstore assistant. He is content – Linda meets his every need, including giving him just the right drink containing “the perfect marshmallow to hot chocolate ratio” (which is 6, in case you are interested).

In comes ornithologist Tulio (voiced by Rodrigo Santoro) who convinces Blu and Linda to leave the idyllic life, against their better instincts. His purpose is noble – Blu, the last male of his species should mate with Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway) to perpetuate their kind. The catch – feisty Jewel is in Rio, and refuses to pitch in with sedate Blu who wants no change to his companionable life with Linda. Neither has he learnt to fly. At one stage, Blu responds with “Sounds kinda lonely when Jewel says, “Flying is freedom and not having to rely on anybody”.

In come the villains of the piece, complete with a wicked cockatoo (voiced by Jemaine Clements) - an inept gang of poachers who steal Blu and Jewel to be sold in the black market. Thus you have all the elements - escapes, captures and chases with the carnival in Rioas the backdrop. It;s easy to see that Saldanha hails from Rio de Janeiro — he has provided such loving attention to detail in depicting the city, the carnival of costumes, and the region’s lush flora and fauna. Catch the a lovely sequence when some some paragliders help out the escaping birds, and you get picturesque views of the city, the iconic Art Deco statue of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain included.

More friends and enemies of the macaws add to the general ruckus – though a herd of nasty monkeys outnumber the friends – a canary, a pelican and a bulldog.

So does Rio offer anything radical? No, but there is verve, and there is colour. A film for the kids, parents are welcome to go along as children at heart. For all you know, you might want to rush off looking for travel brochures for a Rio holiday!

In today’s world where one’s fortunes can change in a jiffy, and fame can be as fleeting as a butterfly on a flower, actors go to a great extent to get into the skin of the character they play. Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan offers a deep insight on a stage performer’s sincere attempt to play the alter-ego of her character and touch the hearts of the paying public. Nina, played by Natalie Portman is the chaste white swan both on stage and off. Her director Thomas Leroy, played by Vincent Cassel, while insisting that she play the sensuously skilled, violent black swan, has tried to create the immortal Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake all over again.

The film is all about the trials and tribulations Nina comes across, in her voluntary as well as unintentional attempts to change her personality from a near-introvert to ‘as-directed’. Nina has to overcome her suspicions about co-performer Lily, played by Mila Kunis, and she also has to deal with her interfering mother, herself a ballerina once.

The director has been able to portray the ballerina’s metamorphosis rather surrealistically, in such a way that the viewers can make their own conclusion about the anxieties and inadequacies in the world of showbiz. And it will all be worth it to see the kind of Academy award winning performance on show!
